Lufkin Residents Celebrate Juneteenth

Juneteenth celebrations are happening all across East Texas. Hundreds of people showed up for the festivities at Brandon Park in Lufkin. There was spiritual music, entertainment and a program honoring the history of Juneteenth.

This year's guest speaker was Willie Mae Burley-a longtime community leader with more than 40 years experience in education.

"We should be very happy for this day," Burley said. "We don't want to ever forget this day. We had our fore parents who made the way for us and now we too can say 'I am an American'."

Everyone who came to Tuesday's Black Independence Day celebration enjoyed ice cold drinks and a free barbecue dinner with all the fixins'.
