Tylerite 'Vegging Out' With Grease Car

When Timmy Burris drives around town, he's amazed at just how far he can go.

"I went over 800 miles, and I used less than a gallon of diesel," says Burris.

That's because last year, he converted his VW Jetta into a "Greasecar"; a two tank vehicle that runs almost entirely on recycled vegetable oil.

"My first thing for looking at it was the higher miles per gallon. After that, I was looking at the fact that we import 60% of our crude oil in the United States," says Timmy.

He installed the $1,000 kit himself, and picks up used vegetable oil for free at local restaurants.

"As soon as I started talking with them, they were all for it. Most restaurants pay to have their waste oil picked up."

Timmy filters the oil himself and carries a 7-gallon container with him for refueling on the go.

The car still needs diesel fuel, because it helps heat the vegetable oil to the right consistency for injection. Then, a simple switch opens the line.

There's no noise, no jerking, and no lingering french fry smell, but there is one drawback to using vegetable oil. It negates the engine warranty, but Timmy says he's not worried.

"Everything that I've read, everything I understand about it, it actually lubricates better and burns cleaner. So, whether it's recognized or not, the engine on the car is actually going to last longer," says Timmy.

It will take another six months for the savings to pay for the conversion kit, but every mile after that, Timmy will be "vegging out"and cashing in.

Waste vegetable oil is different from biodiesel in that, biodiesel is chemically converted into diesel.   Waste vegetable oil is thermally converted.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
