Tiger Woods has brought a new audience to the game of golf. East Texas had their own pioneer, well before Woods. His name was Henry Durham. As the Hope Center of North Texas held their sixth annual golf tournament, they were missing Durham.
Durham, a Hope Center golf regular, was killed last year in a car accident.
The Hope Center decided to honor Durham, who was one of the first black golfers in the East Texas area, by setting up a scholarship in his memory. Durham's family was recognized at Saturday's tournament at Neches Pines in Diboll.
Many friends believe when Durham was younger he could have played pro if not for segregation. But he still helped the game of golf grow in East Texas.
