Boating Safety Tips

The water is calm and quiet here at Lake Sam Rayburn today.

But East Texas game wardens expect plenty of boaters to be here on the 4th of July.

"Boaters can expect to see a lot of wardens out on the water making sure everybody stays safe and abides by the laws," said East Texas Game Warden James Barge.

BWI, or boating while intoxicated, is just one of many safety hazards for boaters, and there are tips you can follow to ensure your safety:

Avoid getting behind the wheel of a boat if you've been drinking, drive your boat at a safe speed, watch out for low water areas or submerged objects and always wear a Personal Flotation Device (PDF) or life jacket.

East Texas game wardens say they don't want to spoil anyone's fun for the 4th of July.

They just want to make sure everyone stays as safe as possible.

"If everybody would just exercise a little courtesy and a little cooperation with one another and just pay attention to what's going on around them, then everybody can be safe and have a good time out on the water and that's what we want to ensure happens," Barge added.
