Back to School Supply Drive Set for August 2

The first day of class for East Texas students is still several weeks away, but it's not too early to start getting school supplies together for your children. Backpacks, notebooks and markers can get expensive for some families. That's why the Deep East Texas Council of Governments is supplying more than 2,000 area families with a free backpack full of school supplies for the fall.

D.E.T.C.O.G. will host a school supply drive on August 2nd for children in need. The drive will benefit kids from 12 East Texas counties.

D.E.T.C.O.G. Youth Director Dora Wilmore said," The drive is going to start in Angelina County at First Assembly [of God] Church on August 2nd from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. What we're hoping to do, in addition to giving them backpacks, is to provide parents with tips and things that they can use to help their child have a successful school year."

If your child needs school supplies for the upcoming school year, contact the D.E.T.C.O.G. office in downtown Lufkin. There will be a limit of two backpacks per family.

You should also contact the agency if you are interested in mentoring school children. D.E.T.C.O.G. needs mentors for kids with incarcerated parents and for a new school-based mentoring program set to begin next fall.
