Tax-Free Holiday Kick-Off

The 2007 tax-free holiday begins Friday and East Texas stores are preparing for the weekend rush. Many retailers are extending their hours to accommodate as many shoppers as possible.

Because of changes made during the recent legislative session, backpacks are now included on the list of tax-free items this year.

State Representative Jim McReynolds said, "Folks that are out looking for bargains and shopping get to save 8.25 cents on the dollar for things like apparel and shoes and other school-type uniforms and so forth, and it's a big saving to Texans. We just want to remind everybody to go take advantage of it."

The tax-free holiday kicks off Friday and ends Sunday. The tax exemption covers most everyday clothing items costing less than $100 each.
