Lead Poisoning Can Cause Serious Health Problems

Since the recent toy recall due to possible lead paint, East Texas health care centers are getting frantic phone calls from parents worried about their children's safety.

Express Lab in Lufkin and Livingston are providing discounted lead testing until the end of September, but even if your children haven't used the toys in question, it's a good idea to get them tested for lead exposure anyway.

Melissa Wheeler, marketing coordinator for Memorial hospital, said, "The paint in older homes contains lead, so if they live in older homes they might want to have their kids checked because the symptoms of lead poisoning for children is pretty severe."

Those symptoms can lead to brain disorders, kidney failure and digestive problems. Testing only takes a few minutes and the results come back in less than two days.
