Preparing for the Purgatory Takes All Year

by Ramonica R. Jones

East Texas cyclists are preparing for the Pineywoods Purgatory. The 16th annual race is more than a month away, but now is the time to start getting ready to ride. The Pineywoods Purgatory is set for October 6th in Lufkin.

There are several rides of varying distances to choose from. Most veteran cyclists ride all year to properly train for the all day event.

Rick Ainsworth started participating in the ride ten years ago. He said, "It's an enjoyable sport. It's a good way to see the countryside and enjoy the beauty of East Texas, on a nice sunny day. The good thing is when the Purgatory comes around in October, it's a lot cooler than it is now so you don't have to worry about that as much."

All proceeds from this year's ride go toward the Susan Mathis Cancer Education Center in Lufkin.
