Veteran Peace Officer Killed

A Lufkin man is dead after being shot by Cherokee County sheriff's deputies. The family of Allen Lee Wallace called the sheriff's office Monday because he was headed to a Rusk cemetery to kill himself. When a deputy got to Sardis Cemetery, he found Wallace sitting in a lounge chair at his mother's grave.

After a second deputy arrived to help console Wallace, he reportedly picked up a .44 Magnum and aimed it at both of them. The deputies fired at Wallace, he died about 20 minutes later at the scene. The deputies were not hit.

Allen Wallace was a Lufkin police officer for 23 years. He left the department in 2001. A spokesperson there said the officers are shocked and saddened by his death and their hearts go out to Wallace's family.
