With their black and gold helmets, the Nacogdoches Dragons look like the steel curtain. But the Dragons defense likes to go by another name.
"We've got the wrecking crew over here," Senior Linebacker Tyler Auxier says. "Three and out, that's what we expect."
No one in District 12-4A has been able to handle this crew. The black shirts are holding teams to just over six points per game.
"We're coming together as one," Senior Linebacker James Ervin says. "We're finally playing like the team we're capable of playing."
Head Coach Bill Harper isn't surprised.
"It's typical of the defense to be ahead of the offense," Harper says. "Especially when you've got eight guys back from the year before."
"We've all been playing together for such a long time," Auxier says. "There's a few of us that have been playing together since 8 to 9 years old in the Pineywoods. Just learned to hit at a very young age."
Since those days, these Dragons dreamed of bringing home a district title. They're off to a good start.
"Everything we've worked for and talked about is coming into play," Ervin says.
Nacogdoches can move to 3 and 0 in district with a win over Henderson on Friday.
