East Texas Robber Arrested

by Tashun Chism

This was the scene earlier today in Homer as authorities searched the woods for an armed robber.

"We got a call that somebody had strong armed the clerk and hit him in the head and that's when we got involved in it," said Angelina County Sheriff Kent Henson.

The robbery took place shortly before 11am at the Homer Mini-Mart. After allegedly assaulting the clerk, Arrester Joe Smallwood fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Authorities initially searched for Smallwood in the Chalk Branch subvision. With guns drawn and the both sides of the road blocked, they soon cornered Smallwood in the woods off farm road 326 and highway 69.

Then suddenly, Smallwood was spotted.

"I saw him stand up and I knew he had a white shirt on and I knew where the other officers were at. I had been listening to the radio. I knew it had to be him. So we advanced on him, me and another officer, and we took him down. He didn't fight or anything. He didn't have a choice," Angelina County Sheriff's Department reserve deputy Dennis Cochran said.

After a search that lasted more than 2 hours, Smallwood was captured, without incident.

"It's one of those deals where we weren't going to quit until we caught him. Thanks to Highway Patrol, the Constables and Huntington PD and everyone else. Everybody joined together and that's what did it. It took group effort and the blessing of god to do it but we did it," said Henson.

Angelina County Sheriff's Department officials tell us Smallwood is charged with aggravated armed robbery.

Smallwood was unarmed at the time of his arrest. Authorities are still searching for the weapon he used in the robbery. This afternoon, Darwin Dwayne Brown of Huntington was arrested for driving the getaway vehicle.
