Once again turnovers kept a Lufkin opponent in the game. At least for one and a half quarters. A late second quarter flurry helped the Pack roll over Conroe 37 to 9. With the win, Lufkin took home their fifth straight district title, and 22nd in school history.
It looked like Conroe would hang around after Justin Smith scored a 33 yard touchdown run. The score put the Tigers up 9 to 8. But Lufkin's defense intercepted Smith on the next three Conroe possessions.
Jeffrey Claybon had a huge first half throwing three touchdown passes. A 67 yard strike to Eric Johnson gave the Pack a two score right before halftime. Lufkin added another touchdown after Al Parks ran back Smith's third interception. The Pack led 30 to 9 at the break, and ran out the clock in the second half.
Lufkin is healthy and sharp heading into the playoffs. The Pack will play Klein Forest next Saturday at Sam Houston State. Kickoff in Huntsville is 2 p.m.
