Freedom Fighters: Lawton Bomer

When seventeen year-old Lawton Bomer joined the Army in 1939, he was looking for a job. What he got was a war.

Bomer was in the second wave of the D Day invasion at Omaha Beach, France. After fighting continuously for six days, Bomer's group was surrounded by the Germans and he was taken prisoner. For almost a year Bomer remained a POW getting very little to eat and suffering from the cold temperatures. Finally in May of 1945 Bomer was freed and returned home.
