Zavalla Fatal Accident Reaction

by Tashun Chism

The news that Zavalla 7th grader Joseph "Cody" Mallicoat was killed in a car accident, sent shock waves throughout school.

"Students were quite upset. The parents of the those who had already heard began coming to the school to get their children because they had just heard it also," Dr. Kathy Ray, Zavalla ISD Superintendent said.

Cody was on his way to school with 33 year old David Jordy, Jr. and Jordy's daughter, Zavalla High School student Erika Jordy. The car they were in was hit by a log truck at the intersection of Pine Street and State Highway 147. Erika only suffered minor injuries. Both Cody and David Jordy, Jr. Were killed.

"Cody was an entertaining little boy. He was point guard on the basketball team. And he was someone who you enjoyed watching play ball. He enjoyed doing that," Ray said.

"He was a good boy. He was a good kid and he will be missed. He was an all around good kid." Clark Bynum, Principal of Zavalla Jr. High and Zavalla High School, added.

In addition to Zavalla ISD's counselor, several more were brought in from Broaddus and Huntington. The counselors talked to students in group and individual sessions. Officials know the healing process will take time, but feel the sessions were a big help to students.

"It's just going to be a hard thing to get through but we'll get through it. This community has a tendency to pull together and help each other out and Zavalla will get through it," Bynum said.

Visitation for both Cody and David Jordy, Jr. Will be held Thursday, November 29, 2007 at 5pm at the Zavalla High School gym. A joint funeral will be held at the gym Friday, December 1, 2007 at 1pm.
