When the wind wasn't blowing the Seymour Panthers backwards, the Alto Yellowjackets were. Alto put together a dominating defense performance, as the Yellowjackets won the Class A Division One State Championship Game 22 to 0.
"The wind messed them up," Alto Senior Trevor Hagerty said. "They couldn't throw like they normally could, so we took advantage."
"We knew the offense couldn't do much in the first half," Alto Linebacker Clayton Scott said. "We had to step up."
Strong, cold winds hampered the passing game. But Alto's Tarlandus Mitchell still found enough juice to throw two touchdown passes. One to Jared Moore in the second quarter. Mitchell clinched the game with a strike to Brandon Thacker in the third.
"I've thrown in the rain and sleet," Mitchell said. "But not in hard win like this."
The win brought the biggest bully in the state, to tears.
"This is great," Alto Head Coach Keith Gardner said after winning his 28th straight game. "Not only to be state champs, but to do it twice. Those kids are undersized and they continue to battle all the time."
"It's sad that it's over," Senior Linebacker and Running Back Lance Lowe said. "I guess you couldn't have end any other way than to end state. You can't complain much."
