Funeral services for James Edward Smith, 76, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, December 23, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jerry Chandler officiating. Interment will follow in the Tom Havard Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born August 24, 1931 in Shelby County, Texas to Ollie (Chandler) and Ezra Smith and died Thursday, December 20, 2007 in a local hospital.
Mr. Smith had resided in the Lufkin area most of his life and was a retired machine operator, having been employed by Temple. He was a member of Burke Baptist Church and greatly enjoyed his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou Smith of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Wanda Smith of Lufkin; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Danny Abbott and Susie and Doug Abbott, all of Diboll; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Sharon Smith of Lufkin; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Neylon Smith of Houston; sisters, Mary Virginia Grissom of San Antonio, Julett Odom of Shepherd, Lucille Jones of Diboll, Betty Havard of Diboll, Ollie May Day of Diboll; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie (Chandler) and Ezra Smith.
Pallbearers will be Shawn Abbott, Jason Abbott, Ronald Ener, Edward Pool, Billy Harshman and Chris Ward.
Honorary pallbearer will be Martin Pool.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Burke Baptist Church, 3855 Tidwell Road, Diboll, Texas 75941.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
