Lufkin's A-Rod

Lufkin's Alex Rodriguez lives and breaths soccer.

"I've played everyday since I was five," Rodriguez says.

Much to the dismay of his girlfriend.

"The perfect date would be whatever she wants," Rodriguez adds.  "My perfect date would be watching a soccer game."

"He loves soccer,"  teammate Jonathan Self says.  "He goes out seven days a week."

"If I play video games it's soccer," Rodriguez says.  "If I'm online it's soccer.  If I'm watching a movie it's soccer."

His soccer obsession has paid off.   The Lufkin senior has been named to the Adidas All Southwest Region team.  The team includes the best soccer talent in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

A-Rod is the only Panther to ever make the list.

"I was really surprised," he says.

It was nice for the program and he deserved it," Coach Russell Shaw says.

His skill makes his teammates laugh.

"He's very talented," Self says with a grin.  "He can make three of four guys miss."

He can also play three or four positions.

"Not many guys can do that," Shaw says.

Not many guys love soccer like Alex Rodriguez.

Lufkin opened the season with a win at the Klein Showcase on Thursday.  Alex Rodriguez scored the only goal as the Panthers beat Klein Forest 1 to 0.  The Pack play again Thursday afternoon.
