East Texans are mourning the loss of one of Angelina County's well known elected officials. Tax Assessor-Collector Bill Shanklin passed away at his home Tuesday morning after along battle with cancer.
Shanklin served almost 20 years at the tax office. His memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Lufkin. Family members and colleagues say Shanklin will be greatly missed. "He was probably one of the best tax assessors there could have been for Angelina County. It's going to be hard to follow him, that's for sure. He was dedicated. He loved what he was doing and he loved doing thing for the public," said Chief Deputy Thelma "Midget" Sherman with the tax office.
County commissioners may appoint an interim tax assessor collector before the upcoming election.
