Mary Beth Goodman, age 68, quietly ended her battle with liver disease Wednesday, February 13, 2008. She died peacefully at a local medical center after a short and unexpected hospitalization. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bob Baggett and Brother Keith Loving officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Miss Goodman was born August 13, 1939 in Houston, Texas. She was the only child of the late Johnnie L. Goodman and the late Bernice Carlin Goodman. Mary Beth graduated from Milby High School in Houston in 1957. She worked more than 25 years in the insurance industry for Hartford and Elton Porter Insurance Agency in Houston prior to moving to Lufkin in 1983 to assist her parents during their retirement. Upon moving to Lufkin, she worked with Davis Insurance Agency for 16 ½ years and at the time of her death, she was employed at Bartlett, Baggett and Shands.
Mary Beth loved her Lord, her church (The Church of Lufkin), Southern Gospel music, Rocky (a precious Boston Terrier and her constant companion), and spending time with the Golden Girls. Family was of utmost importance in her life.
Survivors include Beverly Dunn, a cousin, who was more like a sister, and husband, Billy of Lufkin. Mary Beth is also survived by her "surrogate" children and grandchildren: Marion Dunn McClure and James McClure of Oakhurst and their children, Kristen Holland of Houston, Corina McClure of Dallas and Jonathan Holland and William McClure, both of SHSU in Huntsville; Glenda and Kevin Kelley and their children, Nicholas and Lauren of Lufkin; James and Andrea Dunn of Friendswood and their daughter, Stephanie Colleen Dunn of SHSU in Huntsville; Karen and Mike Braun and their sons, Trey, Parker and Joshua of Tallahassee, Florida; and Timothy Dunn of Austin. Her "kids" fondly referred to her as "Anut Mary Beth". Ms. Goodman also leaves behind her beloved Rocky, as well as numerous cousins and relatives throughout the state.
She was preceded in death by her father, Johnnie L. Goodman in 1989 and her mother, Bernice Carlin Goodman in 1996.
