Bates Windham, 91, of Lufkin, was born March 20, 1916, in Zwolle, Louisiana, the son of the late Alice A. (Buckley) and Harvey B. Windham. He passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, in a local hospital.
Mr. Windham was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and was retired from Southland Paper Mill. He had been a resident of the Lufkin area since 1945. He was a member of the Lufkin Masonic Lodge #669, A.F. & A.M., the Order of the Eastern Star and the York Rite Bodies. Mr. Windham was a charter member of Denman Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, Douglas Windham of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Windham of Lufkin; daughter, Barbara Thorman of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Kenneth Sand of Lindale; special niece, Jean Dickerson of San Augustine; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Mr. Windham was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Windham, in 1998.
Services for Mr. Windham will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Charles Roberts officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park under the auspices of the Lufkin Masonic Lodge No. 669, A.F. & A.M.
