Fred David Griffin, Sr.

Fred David Griffin, Sr., 87, of Lufkin, was born December 15, 1920 in Blooming Grove, Texas, the son of the late Fay Dorothy and Lindsay Ira Griffin. He passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

He was loved and cherished by his family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, George and Lindsay; and his son David.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Zuleika Stanger Griffin of Lufkin; brother, Charles Griffin of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Fred Jr. and Lisa Griffin and their children Will and David, all of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Bob Baze of Houston; granddaughter, Elizabeth Berzin and her husband Edward and their children Benjamin and Isabelle of Houston; and grandson, Benjamin Baze and his wife Kendra, all of Houston. Fred took especially great pleasure in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Corsicana High School, Fred and his family moved to Austin where he and his brothers earned degrees at the University of Texas. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity and of the honorary fraternities of Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Tau Sigma, and Tau Beta Pi and graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering in 1942.

Following two years with Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles, Fred joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. On April 4, 1945, he married his college sweetheart, Zuleika Stanger, at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston.

For the last 60 years, Fred has lived in Lufkin. Following a 38-year career with Lufkin Industries, he retired as Vice President and Director of Engineering. He was active in the Texas Ex Students Association and served on its executive council and as president of the Lufkin Texas Exes Club. Fred served for many years on the Visiting Committee for the Mechanical Engineering Department for his alma mater. His years on the API Committee on the Standardization of Production Equipment reached into his retirement. Fred was a long-time parishioner of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church and a former member of the vestry. He has lived out his retirement years in Lufkin, continuing to enjoy his family, friends, travel and golf.

Services for Fred will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, with The Reverend Douglas J. Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Gipson Funeral Home
