Proud Of East Texas: Monte Verdi Plantation

Monte Verdi, meaning "Green Mountain" is located on a high hill in Rusk County.  It was said that you could see four counties from it's upper balcony when the vast fields were filled with cotton.  Joe and Cecilia Koch bought Monte Verdi in 2006 and were married there earlier this year.

The home was built on a 10,721 acre plantation in 1856.  It was a grand showplace built in the Greek Revival style.

After a series of owners, Monte Verdi fell into disrepair in the 1950's and was used for hay storage, but in 1959 the E.F. Lowry's bought Monte Verdi and carefully restored it.  The Kochs say all they had to do when they bought it was furnish it, care for it and love it.  They open the house to the public several times a year and make it available for group tours.
