Freedom Fighters:Lester Wood

Lester Wood joined the Army Air Corps in 1942, just after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. From 1943 until the end of World War Two, Wood flew forty-one dangerous combat missions as the Allies inched their way across the Pacific, retaking Japanese held land.

In spite of the dangers he faced in the air, it was on the Island of Guadalcanal that Wood was wounded in a Japanese bombing attack. he received a spinal injury that bothers him to this day.

During his recuperation in a field hospital, Wood wrote the lyrics to "Song Of East Texas", which he was to add music to years later. it tells of a young man's yearning for his home back in East Texas and loved ones left behind.
