Funeral services for Charles Ray Smith, 74, of Huntington will be held Monday, April 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Reverend Lamar Denby, Reverend James O. Forrest and Dr. Daryl Smith officiating. A family eulogy will be given by Brent Hawkins. Interment will follow in the Treadwell Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born May 19, 1933 in Huntington, Texas to the late Pauline (Thompson) and Aubrey Smith, and passed on to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, April 25, 2008 in a local hospital.

Mr. Smith was a lifetime resident of Huntington. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Butner during the Korean Conflict, and retired from Champion Paper Mill following 36 years of service. Mr. Smith was a former song director and loved listening to southern gospel music. He served many years on the Huntington ISD school board, and at one time served as President. He was a very talented woodworker, was an avid fisherman and gardener, and loved his canine friends. Mr. Smith was a member and deacon of the Highway Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Delton Ray and Rhonda Smith and Charles Keith and Kim Smith, all of Huntington; grandchildren and spouses, Jennifer and Brent Hawkins of Diboll, Shawn and Chrystal Smith of Huntington, Aaron Smith of Tyler and Abby Anne Smith of Huntington; great-grandchildren, Gracie, Hannah and Halle Hawkins, all of Diboll and Kalyn Ann Smith of Huntington; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Betty Smith of Houston; sister, Juanita Wade Hutto of Huntington; sister-in-law, Frona Lee of Lufkin; special friends, Bobby and Kristie Phillips and Damon and Kim Hildebrandt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Pauline Smith; brother, Burl Smith; and his wife of 51 years, Shirley Ann Smith.

Pallbearers will be Delton Smith, Keith Smith, Shawn Smith, Aaron Smith, Kerwin Smith, Byron Smith and Wesley Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Page, Thomas Jones, Joe David Wilroy, Sonny Lewis, David Kirkland, Karey Lee, Jack Tinsley, Lynn Denman, Jack Green, and the Deacons of Highway Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Highway Baptist Church, 212 South Main Street, Huntington, Texas 75949.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home in Lufkin.
