Rockets made from soda bottles, catapults, inventions, and much more will be presented for the community to see May 7 at the George H. Henderson , Jr. Expo. The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce and the 2008 Leadership Lufkin class invited the community to the 11th Annual Angelina County Science & Tech Fair.
The Science & Tech Fair began in 1998 to foster interest in the science-and-technology-related fields of study. It has grown from hosting 190 teams and 479 students to hosting 600+ teams and more than 800 students each year.
Competition is open to students in grades 6-12. Six categories that students can register to compete in are Catapult, Eggonaut Rocket, Egg-Car-Go, Eggstraction, Invention, and Life Science. The students are signed up by teachers at their school and are prescreened for competition by their teachers. Only qualifying projects are brought to the Fair.
This year the Leadership Lufkin class along with the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce has been working to make this year the best ever. Tuesday, May 6, students will come to the Expo to check-in and register their projects. Wednesday, May 7, they will return for competition. The competition will begin at 9:15 am and continue until noon. The Crime Stoppers Band will be present to entertain the crowd while scores are being tallied and awards being prepared. The Awards Presentation will start at 1:00 pm.
The public is invited to enjoy the competition through out the day. Also, Lockheed Martin, presenting sponsor, will be onsite with a rocket exhibit.
