School Bus Accident

by Donna McCollum

Several people are being treated at a Nacogdoches hospital Monday following an accident between a pickup and a school bus that happened around 3:30.     Two high school students, the bus driver and the driver of the pickup were all taken to the hospital. The accident happened at the railroad track crossing on the south loop in front of Norboard. The injured were taken out of the rear emergency door and loaded onto gurneys. Neck, leg and back injuries were the complaints.

The transportation director and police are investigating. NISD Director of Transportation Loy Walker said from the scene,     " I was advised the school bus driver was not at fault. It was stopped for the railroad tracks and the vehicle hit the bus from behind. " Officer Stephen Godfrey with the Nacogdoches Police Department said,    " The bus is required by state law before it gets to the railroad to stop. This time we had a vehicle that failed to control speed, took faulty evasive action, which rear ended the bus. " Xavier Marano was the faulty driver. He was taken to the hospital. His pickup's front end was crushed. All vehicles were west bound on the loop.

NISD Superintendent Dr. Rodney Hutto came to the accident scene. Nacogdoches Fire Department personnel and Nacogdoches ambulance workers quickly administered first aid to the injured.
