Not everyone was off from work and school on this Memorial Day. Nacogdoches, Huntington and Zavalla schools were in session. In Nacogdoches a calendar committee, made up of staff and teachers, chose to work on this day. The main objective was to work in all the in-service teacher days and required classroom instruction days and still allow graduation to fall on a Friday. Even so some veterans didn't think it was very respectful. Mike Bishop with the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 931, Lufkin-Nacogdoches said, " This is not demonstrating to our children values that we traditionally, that we as Americans need to pass on to these kids. " For the next two years, Nacogdoches schools will observe Memorial Day with a day off.
