59 Bridge Update

News Release:

Work continues on the raising of the bridge at the Whitehouse Drive - Daniel McCall Drive intersection.  The contractor, Zachry Construction Corporation of San Antonio, expects to finish that phase of the job by June 6.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the underpass will open to traffic next week, weather permitting. The facility will then be widened with the construction of separate U-turn bridges north and south of the bridge. That work should be completed by the end of July. The next phase of construction is the Tulane Drive underpass which will be removed and replaced with a wider bridge. U-turn bridges east and west of Tulane are also being added. Construction will require closing the Tulane Drive/Loop 287 intersection for 15 to 18 months beginning in early August. Work on the southbound frontage road from Loop 287 to the Whitehouse/Daniel McCall underpass continues along with preparations for the building of the northbound frontage road.

Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling through this and all construction and work zones. Alternate routes are recommended when possible to avoid possible delays during the project. Work is scheduled to last for 38 months, weather permitting. Motorists are also reminded to obey all traffic control devices and to remember that traffic fines double when workers are present.
