Gift Shop Destroyed

Northbound lanes on Hwy 69 north between the Lufkin State School and Central Primary Campus are now back open following a structure fire this morning.

No injuries reported and the fire is under control.

Central Volunteer firefighters responded quickly to a 9-1-1 call from a passing truck driver who reported the fire about 4 a.m. this morning.  Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Black says it took about 45 minutes to control the fire and the remainder of the morning was being spent putting out "hot spots."  The cause of the fire is unknown.

Black says the structure was a gift shop that has been vacant for several months, located between two houses and the Central Primary school campus.  Black says there was no imminent danger to the school campus.

Once the fire cools, C-V-D firefighters will begin clearing debris in an attempt to get to the cause of the fire.  Hudson and Rivercrest Volunteer Fire departments also responded to the initial call.
