It's hot and you have to carry a heavy bag of clubs. But a ton of East Texas kids will be on the golf course all summer. The Pineywoods Junior Tour golf camp teed off this morning.
Kids 7 to 18 years old will compete the next two months, while learning the rules and etiquette of golf. Entering it's eighth year, the junior tour has sent ten kids to play collegiate golf. Director Danny Leatherman expects another three to four next year.
"I love seeing kids going to college and getting an education and love playing the game of golf," Leatherman says. "It's great that maybe you had a little part in something that made their life better."
Diboll native and S.F.A. golfer Matt Oates played in the junior tour. He's glad he did.
"College's will say that golf is the best sport to play in college," Oates says. "You definitely get to have the best life when you're playing golf. You get to travel all over and play the game you love. It's a blast."
