Evie Lee Smith of Hudson, Texas, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at her daughter's home at the age of 102 years and 10 months.  Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2008, in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Billy DuBose and Robert Putnam officiating.  Interment will follow in the Old Union Cemetery.

Evie was born August 9, 1905, on the Old Graham Place in Hudson, Texas, to the late Ida Rebecca (Russell) and Benjamin F. Smith.  She lived most of her life in Hudson, although her early years were in Bering, Texas, in Polk County where she made her Profession of Faith to Jesus in a Brush Arbor and was baptized in Barney Creek at age 17.  She came to live in Hudson when she married her late husband, Howard Smith, on March 26, 1927, and has resided in this area for the rest of her life.  She was a seamstress, and sewed many years for the public. She was a Charter Member of Providence Baptist Church in Hudson and a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jimmie Lee (Smith-Looney) and Robert Putnam, also of Hudson; daughter-in-law, Sue Smith of Lufkin; grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis Coy and Becky Smith, Tim and Rhonda Smith, Alan and Linda Smith, Susan (Smith) and Kevin Crawford, Todd and Michelle Smith, Gary Joe and Carol Looney, Steven Looney, Terri and Teddy Brooks, Lee Ann (Looney) and Gary Lipscomb, Mark Spurgeon, and Cindy and Jim Smith, all of the Hudson/Lufkin area; twenty-six great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Smith, on October 29, 1965; by her son, Howard Coy Smith, on October 10, 1983; son-in-law, Joe W. Looney, Jr., on March 20, 1973; grandson, Byron Mitchell Looney; and great granddaughter, Faith Smith, on November 30, 1991.

Also preceding her in death were brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Maude Smith, Henry and Fay Smith, L.B. "Jiggs" and Jessie Smith, Rhobie Neal "Rip" and Edna Smith; sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Sidney Smith and Arthur Standley, Dovie Rebecca and Brooks Hendry, Lillie and Roy Jordan, Vee and Oris Palmore, Eunice and Bill Harris, and Eudie Bell Smith; as well as eight of her nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Coy Smith, Gary Joe Looney, Steven Looney, Todd Smith, Alan Smith and Tim Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Spurgeon, Gary Lipscomb, Kevin Crawford, Starlan Glawson, R.E. Bazar, Rufus Dunn, J. Michael Bishop and her nephews and great grandsons.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
