A Jasper man is in jail after he was arrested Sunday in connection with the possible murder of another Jasper resident.

Jasper Police Chief Roy Todd Hunter says 35-year-old Eric Wade Smith was arraigned today.

Martin Byerly went missing in September of 2007. Since then, Hunter says they have been treating the case as a homicide.

Saturday, the Jasper County Sheriff's Department got a call about where they might find human remains. Skeletal remains were found at a hunting lease off of Highway 96, about five miles north of Jasper. Hunter says yesterday, Smith directed law enforcement personnel south of Jasper where they were able to obtain a murder weapon.

Police are also searching Smith's residence for more evidence. Tuesday afternoon, police also began conducting an investigation at the Tri-Night Motel in Jasper where the alleged murder took place. Smith is being held in the Jasper City Jail without bond. Wednesday, he'll be transferred to the Jasper County Jail.
