Funeral services for Bennie Baker, 86, of Lufkin will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Clayton McClendon and Brother Kevin Poage officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery.
Mr. Baker was born February 14, 1922 in Angelina County, Texas to the late Georgia Ann (Diaz) and B.M. Baker, and died Sunday, June 15, 2008 in a local hospital.
Mr. Baker was a lifetime resident of Angelina County. He served in the U.S. Army, and retired from St. Regis Paper Mill following 34 years of service in the maintenance department. Mr. Baker enjoyed hunting and going to Clawson Assembly of God Church, where he was a member.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Sean Moran and Hospice in the Pines for the care given to Mr. Baker.
Survivors include his wife, Marciel Baker of Lufkin; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Carol and Thomas McBroom, Nancy Ann and Dennis Norton, all of Lufkin, Debra Clark of Houston, Vicki Garcia of Lufkin, Cathy and Jim Brooks of Nacogdoches and Connie and Doug Loop of Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Sadie Denton and Bonnie Jones, both of Lufkin; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Faye (Willmon) Baker; brother, Moody Baker; and sisters, Lila Bargainar and Ivy Tucker.
Pallbearers will be David Lee Willmon, Jeremy Norton, David Blalock, John Jones, Emil Jones, Jimmy Brooks and Royce Willmon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hollis Stringer and James Bennett.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 116 South Raguet Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
