James Arthur "Beetle" Bailey, Sr.
James Arthur Bailey, Sr., 67, of Lufkin, was born December 5, 1940, in Center, Texas, to Francis Barto and Betty Cathleen (Hilton) Bailey. He passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2008, in at home surrounded by family. He had resided in Lufkin most of his life and was of the Pentecostal Faith. James worked as a welder at the Champion/St. Regis Paper Mill for 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping and instilled the love of those in his children and his grandchildren. He also enjoyed getting together with family and friends, watching NASCAR, grilling, and frying fish and deer meat.
Services for Mr. Bailey will be held 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2008, in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Reverend Carlos Martinez of Thomas Crossing UPC officiating, assisted by Reverend Willie Wade. His longtime friend, L.C. Whitehead, will be giving the eulogy. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Sardis Cemetery on FM 414 in Center, Texas.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, John and Mozelle Anthony; sisters, Shelba Jean McDonald and Wanda Burt; brother, Thomas Bailey, Sr.; brothers-in-law, Willie Holt, Kenneth Merritt, Brown Addison, Clayton G. Burkett and Willie Owens; and sister-in-law, Burey Bailey.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patsy Bailey; son, James A. Bailey, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Ron Massey; grandchildren, Josh Ford, Amanda Bailey, Jacob Bailey, Taylor Massey and Dalton Massey; brothers, Buck Bailey of Madisonville, and Troy Bailey and wife, Dorothy, of Spring; sisters, Vern Merritt of New Caney, Helen Bowden and husband, Bobby, of Houston, Rachel Addison of Center, Ruth Gillis and husband, James, of Alma, Arkansas, Lynn Burkett of Lufkin, and Vaudine Owens of Hawthorne, California; brothers-in-law, Acie Burt of Houston and D.A. McDonald of Huntington; sisters-in-law, Betty Bailey of Tyler, Carolyn Jernigan of Center, and Anita Milam and husband, Gary "Bubba," of St. Amant, Louisiana; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.
Pallbearers will be Josh Ford, Jacob Bailey, Dalton Massey, Michael Milam, Matthew Milam, Harvey "Skee" Sloan, Bryan Pool, Mark Reeves and Laurin "Kip" Lindsey.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Thomas Crossing UPC, P.O. Box 372, Lufkin, Texas 75902; or to Hospice in the Pines, 116 S. Raguet, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home.
