State Senator wants end to some prison industry contracts

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Several months ago, Lufkin Industries' trailer division closed its doors.

They couldn't compete with a company using prison labor.

"Direct Trailer" is about 85 miles from Lufkin and they employ prisoners from a nearby prison to make 18-wheeler trailers.

They also have access to a 70,000-square-foot facility that only costs them a dollar a year and a reduced tax burden.

Testimony from business leaders in Lufkin and Nacogdoches has been sent to the TDCJ for action.
