Police stepping up patrol

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Labor Day weekend is still two weeks away but Nacogdoches police have already stepped up patrol on the streets.

Their STEP program starts today and for the last month and a half their new traffic division has been working to reduce accidents. "In July there was a 30 percent decline in accidents and over a 50 percent decline so far in August," Lt. Taravella with Nacogdoches PD explained.

But the new patrol officers aren't the only one's who will be cruising the streets. During the next two weeks Nacogdches police will be on the look out for anyone breaking traffic laws. Taravella says, "The traffic division is out totally separate, working on its own, trying to reduce accidents. On top of that there's a lot of step officers working and then on top of that we're also doing a drunk driving crack down."

With SFA students making their way back to town it will create more traffic, but Taravella told the East Texas News that's just part of the problem. "That's just a small portion of our town. So many accidents are local citizens and people passing through and we want to reduce the accidents for everybody and the traffic division did start this summer while most of the students were away so when they come back they're going to have to slow down too."

And so will everybody else because Nacogdoches police will be on the streets and on patrol.
