Asbestos removed from Lufkin schools

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Trout elementary school is one of many campuses in the district that has asbestos in the flooring.

It's something LISD officials say they've known about all along, but hasn't been a health risk.

Now, as part of the bond that passed in November of 2007, they are removing the asbestos as they remodel the open breezeways.

"It's been a major undertaking for the summer. We took as an opportunity to get rid of the floor tile now because at some time in the future, it may become a bigger problem that it was today.  The money's were allocated within the bond package," says Maintenance Director Morty Halyard.

Halyard says some teachers will have to start the new school year with bare concrete floors, but they have already completed renovations on 60 classrooms so far.
