Freedom Fighters: John Green

Posted: Updated:

John Green, Pastor of Lake Athens Baptist Church, was in combat in Vietnam from December of 1967 until December of 1968. But it wasn't a gun Green used as a weapon, it was the Bible.

Although Green had been a military Chaplain for ten years before voluntering for Vietnam, he had never been in battle. It was quiet at first, but then came the Tet Offensive. A thousand Americans would die that year and four thosand would be wounded. Green had only a short time with new soldiers before they went into battle. Many of them never returned alive.

Green retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after twenty years in the military. In addition to pastoring, he is Chaplain of the Peace Officers Asasociation of Henderson County. As for Vietnam, John Green says he "would do it all over again."
