NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A handful of change or a few dollars, that's all the Nacogdoches firefighters are asking East Texans to donate as they try to fill the boot.
Firefighter, Del Birdwell said, "Big or small you might think that 50 cents doesn't do much, well when everybody over the United States when they donate 50 cents then that adds up considerably so no matter what the amount that you can donate it goes for a good cause."
All weekend they'll be out trying to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It's a cause the firefighters union and firefighters across the country are involved in. Birdwell explained, "They're one of the top contributors if not the top contributor to the MDA."
Nationwide firefighters have contributed more than $200 million to the cause. And they're hoping to raise a few thousand here to help patients who suffer from the disease.
"Nacogdoches Fire Department, the city, they support us being out here and doing our fill the boot campaign. It's for research and development with the Muscular Dystrophy Association," Birdwell said.
And while shoppers are out saving a few bucks during the tax free weekend, Nacogdoches firefighters hope they'll use some of those savings to help fill their boots.
