Lufkin stores post good tax-free weekend sales

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The 10th annual tax free weekend is over and this year Lufkin businesses are reporting great sales.

Belk in Lufkin says they kicked off the weekend with a $1,000 worth of free coupons and gift cards to customers and the store manager says that helped kick-start the weekend.

Belk finished strong with a 10% increase in sales over last year.

"It is trending a lot better than it was last year.  Due to the economic state of the community, it's keeping a lot of Lufkin shoppers here in Lufkin," says Brad Vanlandingham, Belk's store manager.

The mall reported record sales this weekend and Target says they stayed really busy as well.  More solid numbers will be available later in the week.
