LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Independent School District will soon have a $9 million new primary school.
LISD board members approved $9.6 million as the maximum amount to build the school that will be adjacent to Slack Elementary.
Slack currently holds 850 students, so the new building will be a feeder campus. That allows LISD to cut the number of students at Slack in half.
Roy Knight says bids are in and officials say they will start construction on the new school, which has not been named, after they get through the hurricane.
Board members also approved the tax rates during Thursday's meeting. The maintenance and operations rate of $1.04 will remain the same.
Knight says the debt rate is going up to 11.53 cents because of the bond issue that was passed.
