Freedom Fighters: Elmo Hunt

At the age of 87, Elmo Hunt still takes center stage with "The Sundown Pickers" in Gilmer and Pittsburg Thursday and Friday nights. But in June of 1944, Hunt was storming the beaches of Normandy with a rifle instead of guitar.

Hunt served three years in Patton's Third Army. His primary job was finding and dismantling land mines, one of the most dangerous jobs of the war. Hunt went ahead of the tanks through France on into Belgium and Germany. But at the time most of his company was killed in the Battle Of The Bulge, Hunt was in a hospital recovering from frostbitten feet in the coldest winter Europe had on record.

Elmo Hunt returned home in 1945, proud to have served his country but glad the war was finally over.
