LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin man will spend the next 15 years in prison after being convicted of killing a childhood friend.

Gilberto Perez was found guilty yesterday of murder, after brutally beating Wesley Tyrone Hawthorne. Today the jury handed down a 15 year sentence and Hawthorne's mother told Perez she hoped he never saw freedom.

During her victim impact statement she looked at Gilberto and through tears told him, "You shattered our world. You took away the father of two young boys when they needed him the most."

Perez was also ordered to pay a five thousand dollar fine.
