MACOMB, Ill. - Big plays and missed opportunities cost the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team Saturday night at Hanson Field, as the `Jacks dropped a 34-14 decision to Western Illinois. SFA falls to 1-2 (.333) on the season.
WIU took the first lead of the game less than three minutes into the contest, but SFA battled right back to tie it less than eight minutes later. Sophomore quarterback Jeremy Moses led SFA on an eight-play, 84 yard drive that ended in a two-yard pass to junior Duane Brooks.
The Leathernecks responded by rattling off 27 unanswered points, included a touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the half to take a 24-7 lead into the locker room. The Lumberjacks tacked on the final score of the contest when Moses connected with junior Contrevious Parks on a 38-yard scoring strike.
The Lumberjacks were hurt by penalties and turnovers throughout the game. Penalized only nine times on the season, the `Jacks were flagged seven times against the Leathernecks. SFA also turned the ball over three times on the night.
Moses finished the game completing 32-of-64 passes for 386 yards and two touchdowns. Moses' 64 pass attempts also set a new SFA single-game record. Parks led all receivers with eight catches for 102 yards and a touchdown. Brooks hauled in six catches for 95 yards and a score.
Sophomore lineman Kenneth Charles led the Lumberjack defensive effort with a career-high 10 tackles. Freshman Brandon Brown added eight stops.
SFA returns to action Saturday, Sept. 27 when they return to Homer Bryce Stadium to take on South Dakota State. The game against the Jackrabbits is set to begin at 6 p.m.
