Memorial Hospital To Drop Trauma Status

The tough economic times are taking a toll on one local hospital. Officials at Memorial Health System in Lufkin announced today that they will not seek to renew their status as a Level III Trauma Center.

The move will not affect any of the trauma care that the hospital is able to provide. But it does mean they will no longer have a trauma surgeon at the hospital 24 hours a day. They will instead go back to a regular rotation.

Hospital officials say a lack of funding from the state is the reason they are discontinuing the program. But again, they say there will be no major change in the services the hospital provides. With Lufkin Memorial dropping it's level three trauma status... Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital will now be the only state-certified trauma center in this area.
