Marine Corps League Pineywoods Detachment stays busy

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Rich Barnhart stands in Veteran's Plaza at the Nacogdoches County Courthouse.  It's a place of reflection for the service of all veterans. "I think the Veteran's Plaza is a real clear signal that the people of Nacogdoches county give great credit to the veterans of their sacrifice and their service to the country," said the the retired gunnery sergeant. He is partial to the Marines. He and over 50 members extend their patriotic duty through the Pineywoods Detachment of the Marine Corps League. "We come together to promote the interest of the marine corp, to promote patriotism, to make veterans aware of their benefits, to help parents whose children are in boot camp," explained Barnhart.

The volunteer organization is service minded. All those flags you see on the courthouse lawn on patriotic holidays. Thank the Marine Corps League. At Christmas time there's Toys For Tots. Just recently, former and active duty marines greeted thousands of people at the Pineywoods Fair. Barnhart shared, "I've been in non profit organizations that seem to just hold meetings and not accomplish a lot. We get out and do things."

The organization will be in the Veterans Day parade in Downtown Nacogdoches on Saturday. It begins at 11 a.m. and the Marine Corps Birthday Ball is later that night at 6 p.m. at the Fredonia Hotel. The Pineywoods Detachment is eager to grow its membership. Service to country and now service to community is what this group of proud marines is all about. Learn more at
