LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The calendar shows it's November, Fall is in the air, and there's a lot of construction going on in the parking lot of Lufkin Mall.  It must be time for Rudolph.

This afternoon employees with Lufkin Industries gave KTRE a test run of the most famous pumping unit in East Texas.  His name is "Rudolph, The Red Nosed Pumping Unit." The actual lighting ceremony for Rudolph is November 22 at 5 o'clock.  In the meantime, the crews are busy hooking up the more than one thousand lights on the display, which includes a 38-foot dump trailer with Santa and toys.

This is the 42 year of Rudolph the Red Nosed Pumping Unit being constructed and lighted for the community by Lufkin Industries.

Others facts:

  • Rudolph is a Mark 640 oilfield pumping unit, and except for its head, it is a new unit painted red for this project.
  • It takes an electrician about four days to install the light bulbs.
  • It takes about two and a half days for a crew to put Rudolph together at the Lufkin Mall.
  • There are more than 1,000, 7-watt lights on Rudolph.
  • After the display is dismantled in January, Rudolph will become a working pumping unit in the oil patch.
  • The trailer, which is decorated to be a sleigh, is a 38-foot Ultra Light II dump trailer. It has the capacity to hold approximately 32 cubic yards of material, such as sand or gravel. This trailer will continue to serve as the sleigh for the display.
  • Unit will be operational 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through the holiday season.
  • The festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. The lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Lufkin Mall parking lot.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
