It's time to usher in the holiday season. Join Rudolph the Red Nosed Pumping Unit as he and Santa celebrate the beginning of the holiday season together during the lighting of Rudolph, Saturday, Nov. 22.
The festivities begin at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Lufkin Mall with the arrival of Santa from his workshop. The event will culminate with the official lighting of Lufkin Industries' Rudolph the Red Nosed Pumping Unit at 5:30 p.m.
During the event, Santa will assist in giving milk and cookies to the children, and the Lufkin Community Band will provide holiday and patriotic music for the crowd to enjoy. Lufkin Industries will give away red Rudolph antlers to children, while supplies last.
"It truly is amazing how this lighting ceremony has grown," said Paul Perez, vice president/secretary of LUFKIN Industries. "Our community makes it the official kick-off to the holiday season. For more than 40 years our employees have been giving this gift to the community. It's a fun time for the entire family.
"We are proud to be able to bring this timeless gift to our friends and neighbors," he said.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Pumping Unit is a Mark 640, fully functioning oil pumping unit that precedes a 38-foot dump trailer where Santa and presents are placed.
The pumping unit is painted red and adorned with more than 1,000 colored Christmas lights, including those that make up Rudolph's red nose. It is manufactured specifically for the holiday celebration. Following the holiday season, Rudolph will become a working pumping unit in an oil field.
The Trailer is a 38-foot frameless Ultra Light II Dump Trailer, and it is decorated to resemble Santa's sleigh. While Lufkin Industries no longer manufactures trailers, this trailer will continue to serve as the sleigh for the display. This equipment has become a symbol of the company's dedication to the community and its holiday spirit.
