NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - As a Lufkin Panther quarterback Jeremy Claybon picked on cornerbacks every Friday night. Now he's doing all he can to stop quarterbacks.
"I love playing football and I know I have what it takes to be a great corner or safety," Claybon says. "I just need a little time."
Defense is not his first love, but Claybon took one for the team moving to defensive back in the spring.
"He's a good athlete with great athletic ability," S.F.A. assistant coach Brandon North says. "He's what you're looking for in a corner or defensive back."
Claybon has embraced the his new role, but admits he misses being behind center. Every Saturday he watches Jeremy Moses throw the ball around 50 times per game.
"In high school we ran the spread and I'm used to the spread," Claybon says. "Right when I change over we start throwing the ball a whole bunch. Every now and then I look over at the offense and watch them throw it and kind of miss it."
"He feels like he should be a quarterback sometimes and throwing for 500 yards like Moses gets," linebacker Jabara Williams laughs.
Claybon points out, it's not about him. It's about his team. But he'll always be ready if they need another quarterback.
