Shelby County hires defense

SHELBY CO./NACOGDOCHES TX (KTRE) - Shelby County is hiring a Tyler attorney to defend a constable and former district attorney investigator in a significant civil rights lawsuit. Constable Randy Whatley and former District Attorney investigator Danny Green face some stiff allegations.   In the suit, Nacogdoches attorneys David Guillory and Tim Garrigan allege unjust traffic stops on racial minorities, unwarranted search and seizures and the practice of threatening those stopped with money laundering charges if they wouldn't agree to forfeit their money. The county's insurer has denied coverage on this lawsuit at this time because it's seeking injunctive relief rather than money. District Attorney Lynda K Russell is also named in the suit, but will be seeking her own attorney. The Tenaha mayor and city marshall are also defendants.
